Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games: what they are, and what the upgrade costs

With the Nintendo Switch 2, many popular games now ship in two forms: the original Nintendo Switch version, and an enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. If you’re staring at two listings for the same game wondering which to buy — and whether the newer one is worth the extra money — this guide breaks it down.

What is a “Switch 2 Edition”?

A Switch 2 Edition is a version of an existing game rebuilt to take advantage of the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware. Depending on the title, that can mean higher resolution and frame rates, faster load times, improved visuals, mouse or motion controls, or extra content. It is sold as a separate product from the original Switch release — which is why you’ll often see the same game listed twice in the eShop.

Do you have to pay again?

Not always. Some games offer a paid Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for people who already own the original, which is cheaper than buying the whole game again. Others only sell the Switch 2 Edition as a full standalone purchase. There’s no single rule — it’s set per game by the publisher, so always check the listing on the official Nintendo store before buying.

How this browser handles it

In the main browser, when a game exists as both a Switch and a Switch 2 Edition we merge the two into a single card tagged with both systems — so you see one entry per game instead of confusing duplicates. You can still filter by system to see Switch 2 titles specifically.
